Why Should I Convert My Tub into a Shower?

Many people wonder if converting their existing tub into a shower is really worth the expense and effort.  While they never use the tub, removing it might seem like more trouble than it is worth.  If you’ve been weighing the pros and cons of converting your tub, here are three great reasons to go ahead and do it:

1) Safety & Accessibility:

Stepping into a bathtub always brings a risk of slipping and falling.  Tubs are much more slippery than showers, and the requirement to step up and over to get in them is unsafe for many (and may not be possible for people with limited mobility!).  With a shower, there is no need to climb over a wall.  You can walk into the shower as easily as you walked through the bathroom door!

2) Extra Space:

Tubs can be large, and if you don’t use them regularly, they are a waste of space.  When you remove the tub, you will either gain space in the bathroom (with a small shower) or gain elbow room while you shower (with a larger walk-in shower).  Even if you choose a shower design that is larger than the tub was, the bathroom will still feel bigger thanks to the glass shower doors!

3) Added Home Value:

Some homeowners are hesitant to remove their tubs because they think it will make their home more difficult to sell.  While it is true that some families (especially those with small children) will see the lack of a tub as a drawback, research shows that most custom bathroom additions (including tub-to-shower conversions) actually increase a home’s value.

If you plan to stay in your current home for any length of time, the biggest question to ask when considering a tub-to-shower conversion is, “Will it make my life easier and more enjoyable?”  If the answer to this question is an enthusiastic “Yes!”, call us today to see how easy and affordable it is to get the bathroom you have always wanted.

Our Process

As with all of the bathroom remodeling services that we offer in Cambridge, ON, our tub-to-shower conversions are completed with tried-and-true methods and state-of-the-art tools and technology.  Here is an overview of what you can expect if you contract with us for a tub-to-shower conversion:

Step 1: Design

Before we can begin working, we need to design a shower that you love and that fits in your budget.  While tile colors and hardware choices are important during this phase, we also have to decide how big to make the shower, where to place the fixtures, etc.

Whenever possible, we will use your existing plumbing with as little modification as possible.  Not only does this save you money, it also means that we don’t have to do extra demolition in your bathroom to move or add pipes.  At the end of this step, we will be able to give you a final price and expected time frame for the project.

Step 2: Demolition

Once you have decided on a final design, it is time to get started.  First, we will need to remove the existing tub and everything that goes with it, including wall coverings, flooring (if your new shower will be larger than the existing tub), and all of the fixtures.

Please note that we will have to shut off your water while we are working in your bathroom.  If your bathroom is equipped with a local shut off valve, we will only need to turn off the water in the bathroom (or even just to the tub).  If it is not, however, you will be without water in your whole home for a period of time.  Be sure to plan ahead!

Step 3: Inspection and Preparation

Before we begin installing your new shower, we always take time to inspect your subfloor and walls.  If any water damage has occurred, this is a great opportunity to repair or replace the affected areas.

If your subfloor looks great, we will go straight to waterproofing and relocating plumbing as necessary.  If you already had a tub/shower combo, we will probably only need to move the drain a bit!

Step 4: Installation

Once all the plumbing is in place, we can begin installing your new shower!  It can take between one day and several days (depending on the complexity of the design and the materials chosen) to set the shower pan, finish the walls, attach the drain and fixtures, and seal the shower.

With everything installed and your bathroom water flowing again, there is just one last step.  After we thoroughly clean the area and head off to our next project, it is up to you to enjoy your new shower!
